Primary School Counselor

Fall is a great time at Barbers Hill Primary to bring out the best in Y-O-U! October, November, and December are exciting times at the Primary School in the guidance classes. In classroom guidance, we spend much time talking about drug abuse prevention. October highlights this with Red Ribbon Week at the end of the month. November continues the theme with The Great American Smoke Out. Students will learn about the differences between good and bad drugs, as well as learning about how bad drugs hurt our bodies. In the second grade, we will connect a science lesson about the human body with this teaching. In the first grade, we will look at the differences between drugs, food, medicine, and poisons.

In the Eagles Serving Others program, we will do our food drive for the Community Food Bank in November. Then, in December, we will collect toys for needy children in our area. Other ideas will be sent home with the students during this time, too. Don't forget to keep sending in the blue slips with the parent affirmations about what your child is doing to help others. (Blue slips can be obtained through your child's teacher, through the front office, or downloaded here.) Most importantly, we pride ourselves in the knowledge that this is the year where our "little eagles" learn to soar!

At Barbers Hill Primary, we strive for each child to have an opportunity for academic and personal growth. Our Mentor Program matches volunteers from the district or community with students who are: experiencing academic difficulties, having trouble adjusting to the school environment, dealing with the loss of a loved one to death or divorce, experiencing the stress of sickness or other problems in the home, or are extremely shy. The mentor takes a personal interest in the growth and development of the child and meets with his/her student(s) once a week before school or at lunch to act as a model, tutor, friend, coach and guide. Eagles Serving Others
Eagles Serving Others is the district-wide call to service. At the Primary School, we assign points for random acts of kindness and teach students the value of serving others. Our goal for each year is 5,000 points. Students turn in ESO slips with their act of kindness written on it. These are given a point value. Each time we reach 100 points, a marker is put on the ESO board in the main hallway of the building. To obtain your ESO slip, please download here.
Reading Tips
Over the years, many parents have expressed concern that their child is not reading well or is not interested in reading. This document shows ideas that have been collected over time to help beginning readers get on track. Download here.
