Purpose of Credit by Exam (CBE)

  • Acceleration (skipping a grade or course)

 

Credit by Exam for Acceleration 

General Information 

Eligibility

  • The student must currently be enrolled in Barbers Hill ISD and may not have taken the course or have been enrolled in the grade he/she is attempting to accelerate.
  • A completed registration form must be turned in to the student’s home campus by the deadline date. Registration forms turned in after the deadline will not be considered.
  • There will be a refundable deposit of $25 per test (cash only) required at the time of registration.  

Miscellaneous Information

  • Tests will be administered only on the scheduled testing dates.
  • A student may take a specific exam only once during each testing window.
  • Two testing sessions (AM and PM) will be held on each testing day.
  • A maximum of two tests per day may be taken.
  • A student may not take an exam for a specific course or grade more than 2 times.
  • Students may not retest in consecutive testing periods for the same grade/course.
  • If the student fails to meet the required passing standard for the course or grade level before the beginning of the school year in which the student would ordinarily be required to enroll in that course or grade level, the student must satisfactorily complete the course/grade level to receive credit.
  • Scores below 80% will not be recorded on the student’s permanent record/transcript.
  • The district will not accept scores of testing completed outside the district’s scheduled testing window without prior approval from the campus principal and Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction.
  • Maximum time allowed for each exam:  three hours.
  • Parents may not be present in the testing room.
  • Students must be picked up immediately upon completion of their final testing session of the day.
  • After the AM testing session has ended, the student will be returned to their parent/guardian.
  • No lunch or supervision will be provided between testing sessions.
  • Placement in a new grade/course will be made only at the beginning of the school year regardless of when the credit by exam was administered. 

Expense

  • Barbers Hill ISD will pay only for the first testing attempt in each subject/grade. Any second testing attempts must be paid by the parent/guardian.
  • Deposits will not be refunded if the student is a no-show, does not complete the test, or is repeating the test.
  • Refunds will be made within three weeks after each testing session. 

Absences

  • Make-up tests will not be administered.
    • o   Students who do not take the test for which they registered on the assigned date will not have their test deposit refunded to them. 

Late Arrivals

  • Students who arrive more than thirty (30) minutes late for a test will not be allowed to take the test. Test deposits will not be refunded to students who arrive more than thirty minutes late for a test.

Students who arrive late (up to thirty minutes) will be admitted but must sign a waiver agreeing to a shortened time for testing.

Kindergarten

Requirements for Acceleration

  • Students are assessed in two phases, over two testing periods. Students who meets the required passing standard on the Phase I assessment will progress to Phase II.
    • o   Phase I
    • §  Math Assessment
    • §  Science Assessment
    • §  Passing standard:  at least 80%.
      • o   Phase II
      • §  Reading
      • §  Social Studies
      • §  Passing standard:  at least 80% on each assessment. 
  • Assessments from the University of Texas K-16 Education Center will be used.
  • It is the student’s responsibility to bring any necessary materials to the testing site, as indicated on the University of Texas' K-16 Education Center's study guide websites for the specific exams. 
    • o   Also, some exams require preparation prior to the test, so please be sure to read the information on the specific study guide for the test in which the student is registered.

Grades 1 - 5

Eligibility for Testing (Grades 1 – 5)

  • The student must meet all eligibility criteria listed under “General Eligibility:”
    • o   The student must currently be enrolled in Barbers Hill ISD and may not have taken the course or have been enrolled in the grade he/she is attempting to accelerate.
    • o   A completed registration form must be turned in to the student’s home campus by the deadline date. Registration forms turned in after the deadline will not be considered.
    • o   There will be a refundable deposit of $25 per test (cash only) required at the time of registration. 

and

  • o   A school district representative must recommend that the student be accelerated.
  • o   The parent/guardian must give written approval for the acceleration. 

Requirements for Acceleration

  • Students must take exams in the four core subject areas:
    • o   Reading/Language Arts
    • o   Math
    • o   Science
    • o   Social Studies
    • Students must score at least 80% on each of the four exams in order to be accelerated.

Grades 6 - 8

    • o   A completed registration form must be turned in to the student’s home campus by the deadline date. Registration forms turned in after the deadline will not be considered.
    • o   There will be a refundable deposit of $25 per test (cash only) required at the time of registration. 

and

  • o   The parent/guardian must give written approval for the acceleration.

    • o   Reading/Language Arts
    • o   Math
    • o   Science
    • o   Social Studies

Eligibility

    • o   The student must currently be enrolled in Barbers Hill ISD and may not have taken the course or have been enrolled in the grade he/she is attempting to accelerate.
    • o   A completed registration form must be turned in to the student’s home campus by the deadline date. Registration forms turned in after the deadline will not be considered.
    • o   There will be a refundable deposit of $25 per test (cash only) required at the time of registration. 

Exams

  • Each exam is worth ½ credit. In order to receive one credit, two exams must be taken (first semester, second semester) and the passing standard of 80% must be met on each semester exam.
  • Courses Offered:
    • o   Credit by Exam for acceleration is not available for the five end-of-course subjects (English I, English II, Algebra I, Biology, and US History).
    • o   Subjects for which credit-by-exams are offered for acceleration include:
    • §  English Language Arts:  English III, and English IV
    • §  Math:  Geometry, Math Models, Algebra II, and Pre-Calculus
    • §  Science:  IPC, Chemistry, and Physics
    • §  Social Studies:  World Geography, World History, U.S. Government, and Economics
    • §  Languages Other Than English (LOTE):  See School Counselor for information. 

Requirements for Acceleration

  • Students must meet or exceed the passing standard of 80% on each semester exam in order to receive credit for the semester course. 

Credit-by-Exam and Class Rank

  • o   Calculation of class rank shall exclude semester grades earned through credit by exam  for the purpose of acceleration.
