Class of 2017 Top Ten

#1 Michael Johns

Michael Johns is Valedictorian of the Barbers Hill Class of 2017. Michael is the son of Michael Johns and Julia McCauley. He will attend Northeastern University in Boston with a major in Chemistry. Michael received a $108,000 scholarship from the Northeastern University Honors Program to attend the prestigious research college. Micha

During his high school career, Michael was named a National Merit Commended Scholar, an AP Scholar with Distinction, UIL District Champ in Mathematics and Chemistry, and was a Regional Qualifier in UIL Chemistry. He also participated in Select Academic Team, National Honor Society, and Chemistry Club, and was voted by his classmates Most Likely to Succeed. His favorite teacher is Heidi Airey, Chemistry.

Michael's favorite Barbers Hill memory was traveling to Costa Rica with his fellow students and Mrs. Airey.
#2 Rebecca Hall

Rebecca Hall is Salutatorian of the Barbers Hill Class of 2017. Rebecca is the daughter of Keith and Trudi Hall. She will be attending Purdue University in Indiana as a Presidential Scholar, with a major in Astronautical Engineering.

During her high school career, Rebecca earned the honors of National Merit Commended Scholar, AP Scholar with Distinction, Air Force ROTC Scholarship, Chevron Phillips Salutatorian Scholarship, Ron Kinnamon Memorial Scholarship, HOBY representative, National Honor Society Outstanding Leader, UIL Science District Champion, One Act Region, One Act Region Outstanding Tech Member, Academic Decathlon State, All Region and Area Band Member, UIL State Marching Band, Soaring Eagle Band Officer and Drum Major, UIL State Solo and Ensemble, Wind Ensemble Freshman, Sophomore, and Junior Girl, Band Sweetheart, and Most Likely to Succeed.

She participated in Marching Band, Wind Ensemble, Academic Decathlon, National Honor Society, Select Academic Team, UIL Science and Computer Science, and Salt Dome Theater, One Act Play. Her favorite teacher is Head Band Director Kevin Stone, and her favorite subject is AP Physics.

Rebecca's favorite Barbers Hill memory was stepping onto the field at the Alamodome her freshman year for State marching contest.
#3 Mason McManus

Mason McManus is ranked 3rd in the Barbers Hill Class of 2017. Mason is the son of Marshall and Rebecca McManus and will be attending Texas A&M University with a major in Chemical Engineering.

During his high school career, Mason earned the honors of National Merit Commended Scholar,  AP Scholar with Honors,  Academic Eagle of the Year, Academic All District Tennis, Academic All State Elite Team Tennis, Male Tennis MVP, District UIL Champion in Physics, Boys State representative in Austin, and was voted by his classmates as Best All Around.

He participated in Varsity Tennis, Select Academic Team, National Honor Society, UIL Current Issues and Events, UIL Mathematics, UIL Science, and STEM. His favorite teachers are Denise King and Amy Cox, and his favorite subject is BC Calculus.

Mason’s favorite Barbers Hill memory was making it to the Regional Quarterfinals with his tennis doubles partner, Davis Woods, to cap off their tennis careers.

#4 Macey McCartney

Macey McCartney is ranked 4th in the Barbers Hill Class of 2017 and is the daughter of Randy and Melissa McCartney. Macey will attend Lamar University with a major in Biochemistry and Film, and plans to complete her Bachelor’s degree at the University of Southern California.

During her high school career, Macey earned the title AP Scholar with Honors, was a member of the District UIL Championship team in Science, and won First Place at the Animated Short Reel Teen Film Festival.

She participated in Select Academic Team, UIL Science and Ready Writing, Chemistry Club, Robotics Club, Academic Decathlon, and Spanish Club.

Her favorite teachers are Kay Houston in English and Frankie Verner in AP U.S. History.

Macey’s favorite Barbers Hill memory is participating in the Spark Engineering Conference at A&M and winning first place in the "Ready, Set, Marshmallow" competition.

#5 Andrea Cantu

Andrea Cantu is ranked 5th in the Barbers Hill Class of 2017. Andrea is the daughter of Abraham and Louisia Cantu and will be attending Sam Houston State University with a major in History.

During her high school career, Andrea earned the following honors: AP Scholar with Honors, Gold medal in VASE State Art competition in 2016, and is the recipient of the Arthur Barry Harvey Scholarship, and a Combs Commercial Scholarship.

She participated in Book Club, PALs, and National Honor Society. Her favorite teacher is Mrs. Short and her favorite subject is History.

Andrea’s favorite Barbers Hill memory is attending pep rallies and fighting for the spirit stick.

#6 Madison Mendez

Madison Mendez is ranked 6th in the Barbers Hill Class of 2017. Madison is the daughter of David and Nici Mendez and will attend the Texas A&M University with a major in Biomedical Sciences.

During her high school career, Madison earned the following honors:  AP Scholar, received the Janell Chenevert & Terri Volter Memorial Scholarship, the Dr. Bill Farmer Scholarship, Texas Bluebonnet Girls State, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution Good Citizen Award, Texas Music Scholar, All-Region Choir Vice President (2015-16) and Secretary (2016-17) of HOSA, Vice-President of Mixed Varsity BHHS Choir.

She participated in Varsity Choir, Health Occupations Students of America, PALs, National Honor Society, Select Academic Team, Chemistry Club, Key Club, Spanish Club, Volleyball. Her favorite teacher is Mrs. McBride and her favorite subject is AP U.S. History.

Madison’s favorite Barbers Hill memory is holding pinkies with her classmates and having fun at pep rallies while they sang "I'm So Glad."

#7 Kelsey Guentzel

Kelsey Guentzel is ranked 7th in the Barbers Hill Class of 2017. Kelsey is the daughter of Perry and Rosemary Guentzel. Kelsey will attend Texas A&M University with a major in Business.

Kelsey was named an AP Scholar in 2016, and she also participated in PALs, National Honor Society, Soaring Eagle Marching Band, and was a Band Officer (Librarian). Her favorite BH teacher is Mr. Stone and her favorite subject is Band.

Kelsey's favorite Barbers Hill memory is when the Barbers Hill Soaring Eagle Marching Band qualified for state for the first time in more than 25 years during her Freshman year.

#8 Meagan King

Meagan King is ranked 8th in the Barbers Hill Class of 2017. Meagan is the daughter of Zac and Melanie King and will attend Texas State University with a major in Biochemistry.

During her high school career, Meagan received recognitions for 2016 AP Scholar with Honors, Texas State Softball Scholarship, BHHS Athletic Scholarship, Texas State Academic Achievement Scholarship, Academic All-District 2014-2017, 2015 Offensive MVP, 2015 District Defensive Player of the Year, 2016 Defensive MVP, 2016 District MVP, 2016 All-State team, 2017 Defensive MVP.

She participated in Select Academic Team, National Honor Society, Chemistry Club, and Softball. Her favorite teacher is Mrs. Airey and her favorite subject is Chemistry.

Meagan's favorite Barbers Hill memory is going to state for softball her freshman year. 

#9 Morgan Phillips

Morgan Phillips is ranked 9th in the Barbers Hill Class of 2017. Morgan is the daughter of Ross and Kim Phillips and will attend University of Texas at Austin with a major in Chemical Engineering.

During her high school career, Morgan earned the following honors:  President of Robotics, Chemistry, and Key Clubs. She participated in Robotics Club, Chemistry Club, Key Club and National Honor Society. Her favorite teacher is Denise King.

Morgan's favorite Barbers Hill memory is constructing cardboard chairs in STEM.

#10 Carson Andrus

Carson Andrus is ranked 10th in the Barbers Hill Class of 2017. Carson is the son of Tracy and Lisa Andrus and will attend Texas A&M University with a major in Engineering.

During his high school career, Carson earned the honors of National Merit Commended Scholar,  AP Scholar with Honors, the Joe Moranto and Elizabeth Gill Scholarships, was a member of the District UIL Championship team in Mathematics and in Current Events, the District UIL One Act Play Championship team, OAP Region, and Boys State representative in Austin.

He participated in National Honor Society, PALs, OAP, and Debate. His favorite teacher is Cayla Hunt and his favorite subject is BC Calculus.

Carson’s favorite Barbers Hill memory is accompanying a teammate who competed at UIL State in Austin.
