Welcome to Barbers Hill ISD!

Barbers Hill Independent School District is a suburban district in western Chambers County, along the upper Texas Gulf Coast. The district encompasses four communities: Mont Belvieu, Old River-Winfree, Cove, and Beach City, and covers 192.3 square miles. Its borders consist of the Trinity River on the east to the Harris County line on the west, and Trinity Bay on the south to the Liberty County line on the North.

Established in 1929, the district has a rich tradition of community involvement and school pride. The fabric of the district’s story is interwoven with that of the petrochemical industry in our area, beginning with the discovery of oil in the early 1900s, through the development in the 1950s of the Mont Belvieu salt dome. The district continues to grow at a rate of 3-5% per year, as Houston expands eastward and our petrochemical industry neighbors expand to meet global natural gas and chemical demands.

Barbers Hill ISD includes 8 campuses: one high school, two middle schools, two elementaries, one primary (first grade) campus, a kindergarten campus, and an alternative (disciplinary) campus.

We invite you to take a look at our most recent data and see why our motto is “Tradition of Excellence . . . by any measure!”

BH becomes District of Innovation

Barbers Hill Board of Trustees voted in January to become a District of Innovation, for the purpose of flexibility in the start date for our school calendars. Under the current legislative mandate, BHISD would be required to start school at earliest on August 28, 2017, creating significantly unbalanced fall and spring semesters. As a DOI, the district has more flexibility in selecting the start and end date for calendars, creating a more balanced instructional environment. The District Educational Improvement Committee (DEIC) will vote on the final calendar for the 2017-18 school year at their meeting February 8, following consideration of staff and parent calendar survey results.

The Chromebook program began at the High School in 2013, with complete classroom sets for all students. In 2015-16, the Chromebook program will expand to both Middle Schools. Students in grades K-5 utilize Chromebooks and Nexus Tablets in classrooms, providing every student with access to advanced technology for digital learning and classroom enrichment.

Our Finances

Barbers Hill ISD has maintained the same tax rate for the past 10 years. This has only been possible through vigilant watch over spending and ensuring the district receives the highest possible return on investment. The Finance Department has been proactive in meeting our Board of Trustees’ goal to diversify district revenue through Chapter 313 agreements. The district leads the state in this innovative partnership with local expanding industry.

What's Ahead

Kelley Building

Barbers Hill ISD opened the new Coach Lloyd Kelley Multipurpose Practice Building (the “Kelley Building”) in early 2016. The facility is located immediately behind Barbers Hill High School and will be used for all extracurricular sports and organizations. It was named after Barbers Hill’s “winningest” coach, Lloyd Kelley, who served the district from 1953-1967. To view a slideshow of the dedication ceremony held January 9, 2016, click here

Sam and Carmena Goss Memorial Branch Library

The Sam and Carmena Goss Memorial Branch Library was opened on April 9, 2016. The state-of-the-art facility is the result of a partnership between Barbers Hill Independent School District, the City of Mont Belvieu, and Chambers County. It is named after former City of Mont Belvieu Mayor Sam Goss and his wife Carmena, who served as a librarian in BHISD for 19 years, before being elected to our Board of Trustees. Carmena served as President of the Board for 4 years, and was a founding member of the Barbers Hill Education Foundation. To view a slideshow of the grand opening held April 9, 2016, click here.
