Samuel Johnson, 90, a respected Barbers Hill maintenance and transportation director in the 1970s, passed away on March 27.
Funeral services for the Mont Belvieu resident were held on March 31 at Navarre Funeral Home, and interment followed at Cedarcrest Cemetery in Baytown.
“He was a very active, intelligent 90-year young man who loved Barbers Hill,” said Superintendent Dr. Greg Poole. “You would not have known he was 90.”
One of Johnson’s granddaughters worked as a Barbers Hill bus driver as well, Poole added.
At Barbers Hill, Johnson was remembered for his mechanical acumen, someone who was able to fix anything that broke in the district.
After his time at Barbers Hill ISD, Johnson worked for and retired from Letsos Company in Houston. Johnson loved and enjoyed fishing.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Loretta Johnson; son, David Williams; and grandson, Terry Johnson.
Barbers Hill trustees Benny May, who was a longtime neighbor of Johnson’s, served as a pallbearer.
Barbers Hill trustee and Chambers County purchaser George Barrera accepts the “Excellence in Safety” award from the Texas Association of Counties Risk management Pool on behalf of the county. The award recognizes counties and governmental entities for controlling claims costs and for developing and improving safety and loss control programs. Barrera has served on the Barbers Hill Board of Trustees since 2002.

Barbers Hill: A Tradition of Excellence
Established in 1929, Barbers Hill ISD has a rich tradition of community involvement and school pride. The fabric of the district’s story is interwoven with that of the petrochemical industry, beginning with the discovery of oil in the early 1900s, through the development in the 1950s of the Mont Belvieu salt dome.
Today, the district serves more than 7,000 students and employs over 1,200 teachers and staff.
As Barbers Hill approaches its centennial year, the district continues to have phenomenal growth driven by academic, athletic and financial successes.
