Superintendent

Dr. Greg Poole has served as superintendent of Barbers Hill ISD since 2006.  With more than 25 years experience as an educational leader – from the classroom to the Capitol in Austin – Dr. Poole has been a passionate voice for Texas students. 

A native of Cameron, Texas, Dr. Poole earned his bachelor’s degree in mathematics and his master’s degree in Educational Leadership, graduating summa cum laude from Sam Houston State University.  He earned his doctorate in Educational Leadership, summa cum laude, from Texas A&M University, College Station.

In addition to classroom experience as a math teacher, Dr. Poole has coached high school sports to state titles, served as a principal, athletic director, executive principal and now superintendent.  He has also instructed aspiring education leaders as an adjunct professor at the University of Houston-Clear Lake.  On the state level, Dr. Poole served as a governor-appointed and state-elected member of the Teacher Retirement System Board.  He is the second longest-serving board member on the UIL Legislative Council being elected to serve since 2007, and has served as the Athletic Committee Chair since 2012.  Dr. Poole also serves on the Texas Interscholastic League Foundation board and the Texas High School Coaches Association Foundation board, and has authored numerous articles and opinion pieces for prominent publications.

Throughout his career, Dr. Poole has exemplified the pursuit of excellence that he encourages in those around him.  Some of his most distinguished recognitions includes District and County Coach of the Year awards, Article of the Year Award for Texas Coach magazine, Hero of Patriotism Award (Vietnam Veterans of America), H.E.B. Principal of the Year Finalist Award, and 2012 West Chambers County Man of the Year Award.  He was also nominated by the school board in 2010 for Superintendent of the Year recognition.  Dr. Poole is in his 18^th school year at Barbers Hill and is the second longest serving school leader in district history.  

Under his tenure, Barbers Hill has experienced unprecedented growth and is one of the fastest growing districts in the Houston area.  Barbers Hill has not raised the tax rate during his leadership, and the current tax rate is the lowest in 30 years.  Barbers Hill ISD is a state leader in teacher salaries, and has continued under Dr. Poole’s leadership to give credence to two long time phrases used in The Hill … Excellence by Any Measure and We Can, We Will, We’re Barbers Hill!

Dr. Poole has been married 38 years and has three children who have all attended Barbers Hill schools.  He is a sixth generation Texan who loves all things related to the finest state in the union.
