School Announcements

Sophomores,

Kiwanis Sophomore of the Year Applications are available in the counseling office.  If you are interested, please stop by to get one.  They  are due back to the counseling office by Tuesday, March 6th!

A hearty congratulations to senior Cailyn Lawson-Wade for her selection to the TMEA All-State Choir, an honor attained by only the top 2% of high school choir students in the state. She performed as a soprano in the All-State Mixed Choir, the organization's top choir.

Thousands of students began the audition process in September, and Cailyn advanced through four rounds of competition, learning new music for each level. She was also required to compete in sight-reading competition as part of the process.

Cailyn performed in San Antonio at the TMEA State Convention on February 17 under the direction of Dr. Andre Thomas of Florida State University. She is the second female and the first African-American Barbers Hill student to advance to TMEA All-State Choir.

"Mr. Truitt and I are so proud of her accomplishment," said Nikki Thompson, High School Choir Director. "This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that she will remember forever."

Congratulations to the Lady eagle softball team for defeating Porter last night in the district opener. The JV won 9–1 and the varsity won 14–1. Rebecca Miller and Sydney Hoyt both hit homeruns for the varsity.

Also, there will be a crawfish boil on Saturday, March 3 at the baseball/softball tournament here. Tickets for crawfish plates cannot be purchased at the game. They must be purchased before hand. Anyone interested in purchasing tickets for a crawfish plate can get them from a baseball or softball player this week only.

The varsity girls golf team place 4th at Moody Gardens yesterday while senior Bethany Reid shot 75 and finished tied for 2nd overall. And on a separate note... senior Jason Bryant hit a hole in one on #8 at Eagle Pointe yesterday using a 6 iron from 195 yards. Congratulations to Bethany and Jason.

UIL District Cross-Examination Policy Debate: A high stakes, high reward proposition. The Barbers Hill Eagles know this all too well. Barbers Hill took home 1st 2nd and 3rd place in 21-5A closing out powerhouse opponents in squads from New Caney, Crosby, and Humble. This is the fourth year running for Barbers Hill to take 1st place at District.

CX Captain Senior Lauren Willingham said, “After coming up short last year, it is a big honor for Reagan and I to go to state. We’re really excited. It’s a great way to cap off our High School Debate career.” Her partner, Senior Reagan Mason said, “Earning top seed at UIL district two years in a row was definitely an accomplishment, but qualifying for UIL State this year has given Lauren and I the opportunity to create more lifelong memories.” This is Lauren and Reagan’s first trip to UIL State.

Team Captain Senior Pamela Johnson said, “This year is sweeter than most. Our team took some disrespect from our opponents after our first tournament this year. To go to District and sweep it just shows the value of hard work over hard talk.” This is Pam’s third trip to State in this event. This is her partner’s, Senior Hailegh Wingo, first trip to state. Wingo said, “This year has been a long, tough road. Going to State validates all of our hard work.”

State Alternates Junior Gustavo De Toni Uchoa and Senior Ian Morgan closed out the bracket to secure all three top spots for the Eagles. “I’m looking forward to my turn for State next year,” Uchoa noted. “Closing out District is the best way I can imagine to end my Debate career. I’m so proud of this team,” said Morgan.

UIL Cross-Examination Policy Debate State is held each year at the University of Texas at Austin. Qualifiers will debate there March 16th and 17th. Rounds are open to the public. The 21-5A District tournament was held at Dayton High School.
